What is SD-WAN

SD-WAN (Software-Defined WAN) uses software-based virtualization and cloud-based technologies to simplify the delivery of WAN services to branch offices. Software-defined networking has been available and widely used in datacenter networks to meet the demands of cloud computing. Now the focus is shifting toward wide area networks (WANs), which can also be optimized to meet the requirements of cloud applications and services.

SD-WAN enables IT and business managers to deploy Internet‐based connectivity(with its benefits of ubiquity, high bandwidth, and low cost) easily, quickly and with quality, reliability, and security.

The key components of an SD-WAN solution include:

  • A lightweight replacement for traditional WAN routers that are agnostic to WAN transport (i.e., support MPLS, Internet, LTE, etc.) and can physically terminate carrier circuits.
  • Support for load sharing of traffic across multiple connections in an efficient and dynamic fashion that can be based on business and/or application policies.
  • SD-WAN solutions provide secure VPN and have the ability to integrate additional network services (i.e., firewall, Wan Optimization, SWG, etc.).

The SD-WAN Value

The rise of cloud applications, universal broadband access, and the surge of connection points has driven the need for better networks. Enterprises consume a lot of technology, requiring greater bandwidth over the course of business operations. Prioritizing access to network applications from ERP systems to streaming video and online collaboration (Skype, Glip, Webex) require control, visibility, agility and security.

While traditional architectures such as MPLS and VPN provide high quality service, they are expensive, time-intensive to install and complex with low capacity. The short-comings hinder an enterprises ability to deploy new branch networks, increase bandwidth on demand and to support cloud-migration. SD-WAN is transforming the network by improving performance and operational efficiency.

By the end of 2019, 30% of enterprises will have deployed SD-WAN technology in their branches, up from less than 1% today.
